Time to go a little mad sometimes.
So we start off by meeting Marion Crane (the great Janet Leigh) taking $40,000 to help out Sam Loomis (John Gavin) so that they can get married. Marion heads to Fairvale (where Sam is) and she deals with a nosy cop.
Marion winds up crashing at the Bates Motel and the Bates Motel is run by Norman Bates (the great Anthony Perkins). Norman asks Marion to dinner and Norman’s mom has a bit of a problem with this. Norman and Marion have a conversation, and…
Both Perkins and Leigh are great during this scene. Perkins brings the crazy energy and Leigh brings the self-aware horror movie energy.
…Marion decides to turn her life around. We then get the famous shower scene. Norman discovers and cleans up the murder, and…
Sounds like a sitcom on CBS.
Time passes. Lila Crane (the great Vera Miles) (Marion’s sis) comes to find Marion. Investigator Arbogast (Martin Balsam) comes to find the money and his trail leads him to Norman. Some mishaps happen and Arbogast winds up getting offed.
Sam thinks that he sees Norman Bates’ mother. Lila and Sam visit Sheriff Al Chambers (John McIntire, great at creepy acting). Chambers informs them that Norma Bates poisoned the guy that she was seeing out of romantic jealousy before she offed herself. Sam and Lila head to the Bates Motel and Sam distracts Norman while Lila explores. Norman overpowers Sam and Lila discovers the very-much not-alive Norma Bates in the fruit cellar. Norman, dressed as Norma, runs into the fruit cellar; but, Sam overpowers him.
We then get the famous psychiatrist (Simon Oakland) scene, and…
Am… am I the only one who doesn’t mind this scene? Yes, it drags; but… I don’t get the ire.
Anyway, the psychiatrist informs the characters that Norman offed his mother and the mom’s new love out of jealousy. Norman couldn’t handle what he did; so, he kept his mom’s corpse. He also developed an alternate personality; that of his mother. The mother personality adopted Norman’s mindset; so, Norman would off any person that he was attracted to. The psychiatrist believes that the mother personality is now Norman’s dominant personality. We then reunite with Norman and we get the famous last scene. We then see Marion’s car being dug up.
Psycho has great writing, great acting and great direction. It is still a classic.
