Is The Gift any good?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting Simon (Jason Bateman) and Robyn Callem (Rebecca Hall). The couple have suffered a miscarriage and they move. Simon and Robyn run into Gordon “Gordo” Moseley (Joel Edgerton) and Gordo and Simon went to high school together. Gordo starts giving the couple creepy gifts. Things escalate and Simon tells Gordo off.
Robyn and Simon’s koi dies and their dog goes missing in the grand tradition of Fatal Attraction. Robyn had a pill problem in the past; so, she takes her neighbor’s prescription. In a Fatal Attraction twist, the dog comes back. Gordo says that he was willing to let the past be in the past; but, Simon does not remember having beef with Gordo.
We find out that Simon is competing with Danny McDonald for a promotion. Robyn randomly faints. Simon finds out about Robyn’s pills and Robyn becomes preggers. We find out from Simon’s sister that teenage Simon and teenage Greg Pierson (David Denman) told that a boy was molesting Gordo. The incident led to Gordo having to leave the school. We find out that Simon made up the molestation thing. We also find out that Gordo’s father tried to destroy him with fire over the molestation thing and that Gordo wound up in military school as a result.
Robyn and Simon fight. Simon tries to “make amends” with Gordo; but, it does not go well and Simon reverts back to his old bullying ways. Simon lies to Robyn about how things went. Danny McDonald goes after Simon because Simon made things up about Danny and he (Simon) made Danny miss out on a promotion. Robyn gives birth (it’s a boy, for those keeping track at home). Simon loses his job and Robyn tells Simon that she wants things to be splitsville between them.
We then find out via one of Gordo’s gifts that Gordo had a key to Simon’s home. We also find out that Gordo was responsible for Robyn fainting. We also discover that Gordo manipulated Simon’s monkey phobia and that he (Gordo) was being creepy with Robyn. While this is going on, an injured Gordo visits Robyn. Gordo refuses to give Simon peace of mind. Simon has a meltdown and Gordo (presumably) leaves Simon’s life forever.
The Gift is a good thriller and it has the triple threat of Bateman, Hall and Edgerton.
