She’s All That (1999) Movie Review

Is she really all that?

So we start off by meeting Zack Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.). Zack’s girlfriend (Regina George before Regina George was a thing Taylor Vaughan (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe)) is running around on him with Rock Hudson… er… Brock Hudson ( a goofy Matthew Lillard). Zack is all “There are plenty of other girls.” Dean (Paul Walker) makes a bet with Zack. Zack is all “I can turn any girl into a prom queen” and Dean is all “Not Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook).”

Laney does not really care for Zack; however, he manages to win a crowd and partially Laney with his hacky sack performance.

Laney goes to the beach with Zack. She agrees to go to a party with him. We then get the famous/infamous scene where Mack (Zack’s sister) (Anna Paquin) gives Laney a makeover, and…

I am grateful that we are parodying/inverting the She’s All That/Princess Diaries makeover trope.

Anyway, Taylor goes all Regina George on Laney.

Laney winds up being nominated for prom queen. Zack and Laney talk about Laney’s dead mom and we find out that Zack’s dad wants Dartmouth for Zack for college. We get the classic rom-com almost kiss; but, Laney jokingly brushes it off as an incentive for her to vote for Zack for prom king.

Zack is bully protection for Simon (Laney’s bro) (Kieran Culkin). Dean extends a prom invite to Laney. Taylor comes back after Brock and her are splitsville and she brings Zack up-to-date on the Laney-Dean situation. Dean reveals the truth and we get the third-act rom-com misunderstanding.

Zack winds up taking Mack to the prom (was this prom Crimson Peak-themed?). Laney winds up going with Dean. We learn that Dean wants to have er… ice cream… with Laney. Jesse (one of Laney’s friends) find out and he and Mack inform Zack. Zack goes after Laney.

We find out that Laney fended Dean off with a fog horn. Laney and Zack kiss and dance.

Graduation time! We find out the terms of the bet and we get some Freddie Prinze Jr. fanservice.

She’s All That… it came out before my time and I am now officially too old for this movie. There are terrible messages and some problematic elements. There are some funny moments. There are some cringe-worthy moments. I know that this is a major teen movie. Leigh Cook is likable.
