Batman (1989) Movie Review

Is Batman any good?

Let’s find out:

So we start off with the mugging of a family. Batman (Michael Keaton) goes after the muggers.

District Attorney Harvey Dent (Billy Dee Williams) is going after Carl Grissom (Jack Palance). Jack Napier (Jack Nicholson) learns of this. Jack is having er… ice cream with Alicia and Carl is also having er… ice cream with Alicia. Jack also wants Carl’s position. Carl tricks Jack into going into a chemical plant to get rid of paperwork; however, in reality, Carl is going to send the cops after Jack.

We then transition to Bruce Wayne (Keaton, for the Batman uninitiated). Bruce is hitting it off with Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger). Bruce leaves when he sees Commissioner Gordon leaving.

Jack falls into some chemicals.

Vicki and Bruce have their date. Vicki and Bruce decide to keep things casual and we meet this movie’s version of Alfred (Michael Gough).

We then get the famous/infamous Joker/Jack surgery scene. Joker offs Carl.

Vicki tries to get Bruce to look at some photos of war zones; but, Bruce has to leave. Alfred is being cryptic; so, Vicki looks into this Bruce Wayne. Vicki sees Bruce give his parents flowers. Joker offs some mob people and he develops a thing for Vicki Vale.

We then find out that the Joker is putting Smilex in products and Smilex (essentially) ensures that the product user will die happy. Joker takes Vicki, Batman saves her and he gives her (essentially) a recall list for the Gotham Gazette.

Bruce is going to tell Vicki the truth; however, the Joker shoots Bruce (Bruce makes it) and we find out that the Joker offed Bruce’s parents. We then find out that the Joker will be handing out fake money at a parade.

Bruce/Batman finds out that the Joker will be putting poison in the parade balloons; so, Batman gets rid of Axis chemicals. Batman gets rid of the Balloons.

Clock tower time, baby! Batman rescues Vicki Vale, Joker is offed and we end with the bat signal.

Batman is a good Batman movie. I grew up with the Christopher Nolan Batman series; so, I am more nostalgic for those movies. Parts of this movie felt very 1930s/1940s and parts felt very 1980s. Some parts were cheesy.
