Does Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting Dinky Bossetti (Winona Ryder). Dinky is adopted. Dinky is struggling with bullying and adoptive parents who just don’t get her. Dinky is friends with animals.
Rochelle (Dinky’s adoptive mom) (Frances “Rose’s mom in Titanic” Fisher) wants Dinky to be into makeup. Les (Dinky’s adoptive dad) (Graham Beckel) is kind of a doormat and he lets Rochelle send Dinky to counselors. Dinky embarrasses Gerald Howells (Thomas Wilson Brown).
Elizabeth Zaks (the guidance counselor) (Laila Robins) takes Dinky under her wing. Gerald starts to have a crush on Dinky. Dinky believes that she is the daughter of Roxy Carmichael. Roxy lived in Dinky’s hometown before she left and got famous because she had a song that was written about her. Roxy is (briefly) coming back to said hometown for a dedication ceremony and this (naturally) stirs up some gossip. Denton Webb (Jeff Daniels) and Roxy had a baby before she left town; so, Denton becomes a surrogate father figure to Dinky. Barbara (Denton’s wife) cannot handle Denton’s erotomania; so, she leaves him.
Roxy day time! Dinky dresses up and she preps to leave with Roxy. Rochelle tries to pull the Meredith Switzerland from The Parent Trap card; but, Les decides to finally be a dad to Dinky. It turns out that Roxy was unable to make it, and…
I go back and forth on this. On the one hand, it would’ve been nice to see her. On the other hand, I like that they went the unpredictable route.
Anyway, Denton finds Dinky and we find out that Denton and Roxy’s child passed away.
Dinky and Gerald wind up together.
I like Winona Ryder as a performer. For me, a lot of Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael dragged. It kind of felt like a Hallmark Channel movie. I did like that it poked fun at celebrity obsession. I also liked the fact that it made some good points about celebrity obsession. I also feel like the movie nailed some of the facets of living in a small town. I did appreciate that some of the towns people became surrogate family members for Dinky. There are some elements that do not hold up in modern times.
