Supergirl (1984) Movie Review

Supergirl time, baby!

So we start off with Kara Zor-El (Kal-El’s cuz/Jor-El’s niece) (Helen Slater) residing in Argo City. Argo City did not go down with Krypton because it got into the Innerspace. Zaltar (Peter O’Toole) lets Kara see the Omegahedron and this thing is the battery behind Argo.

Sidebar/Salad Bar: Did that penile-looking object going into the Omegahedron seem like a metaphor for having er… ice cream?

Anyway, the Omegahedron winds up lost in space. Kara trails the Omegahedron to Earth and she becomes Supergirl.

Wannabe witch Selena (Faye Dunaway) stumbles upon the Omegahedron.

Kara’s Clark Kent identity is Linda Lee and she becomes friends with Lucy Lane (Maureen Teefy). Kara/Linda has a crush on Ethan (Hart Bochner).

Selena lusts for Ethan; so, she gives Ethan a love potion. However, Linda has to save Ethan from Selena’s construction vehicle; so, Ethan falls for Linda.

Selena takes Ethan hostage and she sends Kara to the Phantom Zone. Kara runs into Zaltar and Zaltar offs himself to help Kara.

Battle time! Zaltar’s voice/spirit helps Kara. Nigel (I forgot to mention him earlier. He cares for Selena; but, Selena does not reciprocate) (Peter “The Mawage Guy from The Princess Bride” Cook) inexplicably turns against Selena and he tells Kara to turn Selena’s conjured demon against her. This all culminates in Selena and Bianca (I forgot to mention her earlier. She is the fourth-wall breaking comedy sidekick) (Brenda Vaccaro) being sucked into a mirror (that came out wrong and this fate seemed a bit harsh for the fourth-wall breaking comedy sidekick).

Ethan and Kara/Linda/Supergirl have a moment and Ethan reveals that he knows the truth. Supergirl takes the Omegahedron back to Argo City.

Supergirl is campy and boring. It has that kitschy 1980s movie feel to it. The Argo City stuff is dull. The school stuff is the same stuff that you would see in other teen movies. I think that I liked Helen Slater more as Linda Lee than I did as Supergirl. The Ethan and Kara/Linda/Supergirl romance is hard to buy because Ethan is under a love potion for most of their romance and we rarely see them interact when he is not under the love potion. Selena is pure 1980s camp and Dunaway acts accordingly. Brenda Vaccaro is fun.
