X-Men: The Last Stand time, baby!
So we start off years ago. Erik Lensherr/Magneto (Ian McKellan) and Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) are visiting teen Jean Grey. Jean demonstrates her powers.
Years pass. Young Warren Worthington is engaging in some wing mutilation. Warren’s dad comes into the bathroom where Warren is and Warren’s dad gets the wrong idea (that came out wrong).
Years pass. Storm (Halle Berry) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) are having a training exercise for their students (Iceman/Bobby (Shawn Ashmore), Rogue (Anna Paquin), Colossus and Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page/Elliot Page). Rogue is struggling with jealousy over Kitty and Bobby.
We then reunite with Scott Summers/Cyclops (James Marsden).
We then meet Hank “Beast” McCoy (Kelsey Grammer) and we find out that Mystique (Rebecca Romijn) was trying to get into Worthington labs. We then find out about a Jimmy and that he can make mutants not be mutants.
The X-Men find out about the mutant cure thing and Rogue is pumped. Magneto uses the cure thing to grow his following.
We get the Cyclops vs. lake scene. Jean Grey (Famke Jannsen) comes back and she offs Scott.
Magneto stages a prison break for Mystique. He also gets Multiple Man and the Juggernaut (Vinnie Jones). Someone tries to cure Magneto; but, Mystique takes the cure for him. We get some Rebecca Romijn fanservice and Magneto ditches Mystique because she is no longer a mutant. Calisto becomes Magneto’s new henchwoman.
We then reunite with Xavier, who is telling Logan that Jean has another personality: the Phoenix. Logan then visits Jean and Jean tries to comfort herself over Scott’s death by having er… ice cream with Logan; but, Logan is all “We can’t have ice cream! Scott just died!” Jean snaps out of it and she leaves.
Magneto and Charles pay Jean a visit. Jean sides with Magneto and she offs Charles.
Beast is all “The Institute is going to have to close.” Warren, looking for safety, arrives. Storm is determined to keep the school open.
Magneto goes after Worthington labs. Storm goes after Calisto. Kitty has to protect Jimmy from the Juggernaut and we get the infamous Juggernaut line. Magneto gets (allegedly) cured.
Phoenix time! As other reviewers have pointed out, we don’t really know the Phoenix that well. Anyway, Jean has Logan off her.
Rogue takes the cure so that she can stop King Midas-ing everything. Angel is now a part of the X-Men. Jean, Xavier and Scott are in the garden.
We end with Erik/Magneto playing chess and hints that he may still have powers.
I actually wound up enjoying this one. I think that the mutant cure storyline and the Jean Grey/Phoenix storyline would’ve worked better as separate movies. Jean Grey/the Phoenix felt sidelined.
