A Season for Miracles (1999) Movie Review

Does A Season for Miracles hold up?

Let’s find out:So we start off with Alanna ‘Lani’ Thompson (Mae Whitman) stealing an angel snow globe from a hospital gift shop.

We then meet Alanna’s aunt Emilie Thompson (Carla Gugino) and Alanna’s brother J.T. Thompson (Evan Sabara), and…

Does… does Carla Gugino have some sort of weird connection to the Sabaras?

Anyway, Emilie, J.T. and Alanna are going to see  Berry Thompson (Laura Dern). Berry is the drug-addicted mother of J.T. and Alanna and Berry is Emilie’s sister. Berry and Emilie have a tense family moment. Social/child services in the form of Ruth Doyle (Kathy Baker) try to take Alanna and J.T.; but, Emilie is all “Nah! I’m going to kidnap these kids!,” and…

When… when did this become a Lifetime movie?

Emilie, J.T. and Alanna wind up in Bethlehem, Rhode Island. Patty Duke directs the trio to the Pierce house (no relation to the Pierce house in Curse of Chucky… hopefully).

Hallmark Channel Old Lady Stereotypes Agatha (Mary Fogarty) and Corinna (Mary Louise Wilson) visit Emilie, J.T. and Alanna. Emilie then meets Police Captain Nathan Blair (David Conrad) and Nathan takes the trio grocery shopping because Emilie is having car problems. It turns out that Emilie’s car will be keeping her in Bethlehem for awhile and Doyle starts alerting the authorities of Emilie.

We then meet Hallmark Channel Stereotype Sadie Miller (Faith Prince) and Sadie helps Emilie find a job. Coffee (conveniently) stops Nathan from finding out about Emilie. We then meet Alexander Foster (Kurt Deutsch) and it turns out that Emilie has more time.

Emilie and Nathan then have a steamy Christmas decorating make-out session (there is a sentence that I thought that I would never write on this blog).

Montage time!

Nathan helps Alanna to read; however, things get tense when Alanna finds out that Emilie intends to stick to the original plan. However, Alexander reveals that Emilie has more time. Emilie takes Alanna and J.T. to see Nathan-as-Santa. Nathan gives Alanna a book; however, Sadie discovers the truth about Emilie.

Gerald Foster (Paul Collins) is ticked about Emilie. We then meet Hon. Judge Nancy Jakes (Lynn Redgrave), and…

Redgrave would’ve made a great Justice Strauss in A Series of Unfortunate Events adaptation.

Anyway, Patty Duke talks Nathan into hearing Emilie out. Alanna testifies, and…

Most Hallmark Channel movies have their child actors look cute, act older than they are or they have them snap one-liners. This movie puts its child actors through the wringer and Mae Whitman is up to the challenge. Whitman is phenomenal.

Anyway, Nathan (essentially) has a love confession for Emilie and Judge Jakes (surprisingly) lets this fly. Nathan, Emilie, Alanna and J.T. become a family. We end with a creepy close-up of an angel statue.

A Season for Miracles is a good movie.
