Borrowed Hearts (1997) Movie Review

Borrowed Hearts time, baby!

So we start off with the sexiest turkey/Thanksgiving thing this side of the turkey baster in Seed of Chucky.

We then meet playboy businessman Sam Field    (Eric McCormack). We then meet Kathleen Russell (Roma Downey). Kathleen is an employee of Sam’s and Kathleen’s daughter (Zoey Russell (Sarah Rosen Fruitman)) is acting up at school because Zoey’s father/Kathleen’s ex-husband (Jerry Russell (Kevin Hicks)) abandoned them.

Sam’s lifestyle comes to a halt when he finds out from his best friend (Dave Hebert (Shawn Alex Thompson)) that he (Sam) will have to pretend to have a family so that he can do business with  Javier Del Campo (Garry Marshall darling Héctor Elizondo). Sam and Kathleen stumble upon each other because of Zoey. Sam agrees to pay Kathleen and Kathleen gets She’s All That‘d/The Princess Diaries‘d.

Kathleen and Sam have an awkward dinner with Javier Del Campo and Kathleen and Sam are stuck sharing a room. Del Campo (conveniently) extends his visit. Things get rough for Kathleen and Sam when Sam discovers that Zoey destroyed his Cuban cigars. Kathleen calls it quits; however, Sam visits her. We find out that Kathleen wanted to be an artist and, even though she loves Zoey, she still wants to be an artist, and…

You would never see this in a Hallmark Channel movie and I do appreciate this. The acknowledgement that it is okay for women to want careers.

Anyway, Kathleen and Sam patch things up; however, Kathleen’s ex-husband is stalking them like he is the villain in a Lifetime movie.

Ice skating time! Zoey teaches Sam how to skate and we find out that Sam is starting to prefer his family lifestyle. We then find out that Sam has daddy issues because Hallmark Channel movies have more daddy issues than the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Jerry blackmails Sam. Kathleen finds out that the Del Campo business deal means that employees will lose their jobs. Kathleen throws Sam a guilt party (the best kind of party, really) and things heat up between them until Sam snaps at Kathleen.

Later that night, things heat up between Sam and Kathleen again; however, Zoey has a (convenient) nightmare.

Christmas time! Zoey gives Sam a gift related to his daddy issues and Sam gives Kathleen an artsy fartsy gift. Things get awkward when Sam kisses Kathleen and Zoey, who was a hardcore Jerry/Kathleen shipper, gets upset. Sam calls up Jerry, Jerry comes and Sam reveals the truth to Del Campo. Sam decides not to go through with the deal, Del Campo leaves and Dave leaves.

Jerry is all “Once a deadbeat, always a deadbeat.” He bids farewell to Zoey and he leaves. A heartbroken Zoey tries to climb a tree and she winds up in danger; however, Sam saves her. Zoey becomes a Kathleen/Sam shipper and Kathleen and Sam get together. We end with Zoey bidding adieu to Del Campo.

I grew up with this one. I’m giving into the sentimentality. Borrowed Hearts (my dad calls it Borrowed Farts) is a good movie.
