Superman (1978) Movie Review

Does Superman hold up?

Let’s find out:

So we start off with Jor-El (Marlon Brando) giving General Zod (Terence Stamp) a one-way ticket to the Phantom Zone. Jor-El and Lara (Susannah York) give Kal-El a ticket to Earth before Krypton is destroyed. Kal-El lands in Smallville, Kansas and Jonathan (Glenn Ford)    and Martha Kent (Phyllis Thaxter) stumble upon him and they name him Clark Kent.

Jonathan dies. We then get the Fortress of Solitude. Hologram Jor-El acts as Yoda to Clark/Kal-El and we get the famous Superman suit. Clark (Christopher Reeve) gets work at the Daily Planet in Metropolis, and…

I forgot how good Christopher Reeve was as the dweeby Clark Kent.

…and he has a thing for Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). Clark/Superman rescues Lois and others. Perry White (Jackie Cooper) has a Superman obsession. Supes visits Lois and Supes is all “I’ve seen London. I’ve seen France. I’ve seen Lois’ underpants.” Supes then takes Lois on a flight. We then get the infamous Can you read my mind? poem, and…

Guys, this was the 1970s. It was the Ice Castles era.

Anyway, we then meet Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman). Lex goes after the San Andreas Fault. Lex uses Kryptonite on Superman and he imprisons him. We then find out that a missile is headed for Hackensack, New Jersey.

Eve Teschmacher (Valerie Perrine) helps Supes because she has family in Hackensack. Supes is able to stop that missile; but, another one causes earthquakes in California. We then get the infamous Supes deus ex machinas Lois back to life scene. We end with Lex being sent to prison.

Superman is still a good movie.
