Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge (2001) Movie Review

Does Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge hold up?

Let’s find out:

So we start off by reuniting with Marnie Piper Kimberly J. Brown). Marnie has a thing for Kal (Daniel Kountz) and she tries to impress him with a spellbook (cue the Screamin’ Jay” Hawkins).

We discover that Halloweentown now looks like a depression medicine commercial of itself and that Luke (Phillip Van Dyke) was impacted. Aggie (Debbie Reynolds) thinks that this is the Grey Spell, and…

No Fifty Shades jokes, please.

and we find out from Dylan Piper (Joey Zimmerman) and Sophie Piper (Emily Roeske) that the spellbook is missing in action. We also find out that Kal is the son of Kalabar (sounds like a horror movie) and that he is responsible for the spellbook’s disappearance. Our group starts believing that the Grey Spell is not long-lasting, and…

I must reiterate. No Fifty Shades jokes, please.

We then meet Gort (Blu Mankuma). The group spends time with Gort and we discover that the Grey Spell can be undone by saying Trapa. In other words, performing the spell backwards, and…

I must reiterate once again. No Fifty Shades jokes, please.

Meanwhile, Kal is working on turning humans into monsters, and…

Is… is this a Guillermo del Toro movie?

…and people are stuck becoming their Halloween costume. I feel bad for the people that had terrible costume taste that year.

Marnie is able to open the portal between the world and Halloweentown. Marnie is able to get the spellbooks back from Kal and she defeats him.

Sidebar/Salad Bar: There is a part in this where Gwen Piper (Judith Hoag)’s love interest eats a fly and that reminded me of the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond where Robert (Brad Garrett)’s love interest eats a fly.

Sidebar/Salad Bar 2: I wish that they would’ve revealed thar Gwen’s love interest was Kalabar in disguise. Kalabar was Kal’s father and Kal’s “father” was Gwen’s love interest; so, it would’ve made sense.

They have their act more together with this one. The acting is better and there are more interesting plot points. Halloweentown II: Kalabar’s Revenge is nostalgic to me because I watched it as a kid. However, you probably will enjoy it less as an adult.
