Does High School Musical hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens). The two are selected to sing together and they sing “Start of Something New.” It turns out that Gabriella is going to Troy’s high school and Gabriella befriends Taylor McKessie (Monique Coleman).
We then get “Get’cha Head in the Game”. We then get “What I’ve Been Looking For” from Sharpay Evans (Ashley Tisdale) and Ryan Evans (Lucas Grabeel). Troy and Gabriella are going to audition for the school musical; however, there is a delay in the process; but, Ms. Darbus (Alyson Reed) gives them another audition.
Everyone is shocked that Troy auditioned for the musical, and…
When I was in high school (back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth), we did have cliques and the jocks and the music department were not particularly close; but, the jocks still made cameos in the music department’s club/variety shows.
Anyway, we then get “Stick to the Status Quo” and Taylor and Chad Danforth (Corbin Bleu) want to enforce the status quo.
The basketball team makes it seem like Troy couldn’t care less about Gabriella. Gabriella sees this from a webcam. The webcam is in the boys’ locker room, and…
This is probably the most innocent example of a girl viewing a video from the boys’ locker room.
We then get “When There Was Me and You,” and…
My nickname for “When There Was Me and You” is “The High School Break-up Song.”
Anyway, Troy can’t focus on his basketball career and Gabriella is down in the dumps; so, Taylor and the basketball team have a change of heart.
Sharpay creates a scheduling conflict for Troy and Gabriella; but, Kelsi Nielsen (Olesya Rulin) discovers this and both the basketball team and the nerd squad create technical difficulties. We then get “Bop to the Top.” We then get “Breaking Free” and Gabriella and Troy get the parts in the play. The team wins, the nerd squad wins, we get “We’re All in This Together,” Taylor and Chad are all “We’re Going to Get Together” and Sharpay reconciles with Gabriella until High School Musical 2.
Post-credits (is this a Marvel movie?):
Sharpay tells Zeke Baylor (Chris Warren) that she loves his cookies (get your mind out of the gutter, guys).
High School Musical is cheesy, it does drag in some spots and it is a sugar-coated view of high school. However, it is a good Disney Channel Original Movie, it can be self-aware at times, it does have fun poking at high school cliques/rules/tropes, the music is catchy and the movie is nostalgic for me because I was a tween/teen when it came out.
