Does Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by spending time with Meredith Quill (Laura Haddock) and Ego (Kurt Russell).
Years pass and we transition to Baby Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel) dancing to “Mr Blue Sky” while the Guardians do battle. We then meet Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki), who is a high-ranking member of The Sovereign. The Guardians get Nebula (Karen Gillan) and they head off to Xandar to get the reward money. The Sovereign goes after the group because Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) took some of their batteries. We get typical Guardian squabbles, we meet Mantis (Pom Klementieff), we reunite with Ego and we find out that Ego is Peter Quill/Star Lord (Chris Pratt)’s father.
We then reunite with Yondu (Michael Rooker). Yondu tries to converse with Stakar Ogord (Sylvester Stallone); but, Ogord does not want to because Yondu did not follow the Ravager code. Ayesha employs the Ravagers to take care of the Guardians.
We find out that Peter had a childhood fantasy where David Hasselhoff was his dad. Drax (Dave Bautista) is acting like a school bully to Mantis. The Ravagers come and Rocket does battle with them; but, Yondu is being soft because of Peter.
Ego is giving some of the Guardians a self-tour. Peter then lampshades/breaks the fourth wall and tells Gamora (Zoe Saldana) that they have a Sam-and-Diane-on-Cheers dynamic, and…
I don’t think that I’ve seen a full episode of Cheers, actually.
Anyway, Tazerface (Chris Sullivan) and some of the other Ravagers go all The Caine Mutiny on the Yondu devotees. They also go all The Caine Mutiny on Yondu and Rocket. The Ravagers are mean to Baby Groot, Kraglin (Sean Gunn) helps Yondu and Yondu goes on a murder spree.
Nebula and Gamora do battle and we find out that Thanos punished Nebula for losing to Gamora, and…
This is a metaphor for about seventy-five different things, guys.
Anyway, we find out that Ego had a lot of kids. We also find out that Ego made Meredith Quill have cancer. Ego also tries to take away Peter’s last connection to Meredith (the Walkman). Baby Groot makes Ego explode, Yondu winds up protecting Peter and Yondu loses his life in the process.
Yondu gets a funeral, Nebula and Gamora reconcile and the Ravagers pay tribute to Yondu.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a good time and it is emotionally stirring.
