Does Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by reuniting with Juni Cortez (Daryl Sabara) and we find out that Carmen Cortez (Alexa Vega/Alexa PenaVega) is missing in action.
We then reunite with the now-good Donnagon Giggles (Mike Judge) and Francesca Giggles (Salma Hayek). We find out that the The Toymaker (Sylvester Stallone) created Game Over. Game Over is a video game. Carmen is literally and figuratively trapped in it and the Toymaker is using this game to take over kids, and…
I’m sure that there is no social commentary here.
Anyway, we also find out that Juni needs to literally and figuratively play the game and retrieve Carmen.
We’re then introduced to Francis (Bobby Edner), Arnold (Ryan Pinkston) and Rez (Robert Vito). Juni brings in his grandfather (Ricardo Montalbán) for assistance. We then meet Demetra (Courtney Jines).
The game players believe that Juni is The Guy. Juni wins a race against Rez. Juni gives Demetra some of his lives. Demetra gives Juni a map, and…
Ah, young love.
Anyway, Arnold and Juni battle; however, Demetra takes Juni’s place and she winds up getting a game over. Juni finds Carmen. We find out that the Toymaker is why Juni and Carmen’s grandpa uses a wheelchair, and…
When… when did Spy Kids become Curse of Chucky?
Anyway, Donnagon is worried that Carmen and Juni’s grandfather is going to go all Nica in Curse of Chucky on the Toymaker. We then meet The Guy (Elijah Wood) and The Guy promptly loses all of his lives.
It turns out that Demetra is working on the bad side and the Toymaker sends robots after the kids; however, Demetra assists the group in getting back to reality. We then find out that Valentin (Carmen and Juni’s grandfather) brought the Toymaker into reality and robots go after the city.
We then get a cast reunion: Fegan Floop (Alan Cumming), Minion (Tony Shalhoub), Dinky Winks (Bill Paxton), Romero (Steve Buscemi), Gary Giggles (Matt O’Leary) and Gerti Giggles (Emily Osment). Valentin forgives the Toymaker. It turns out that that is what the Toymaker wanted, and…
I’ve heard of less weird ways of getting forgiveness; but, that is still a great, great lesson for any kid to learn.
Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over is focused on technology and a lot of the technology does not hold up. There are funny moments, there is a good lesson for kids on treating your grandparents with respect, there is a good lesson for kids on forgiving people and some of the movie is nostalgic; but, I enjoyed this more when I was a kid. There is less adult appeal this time around and it is the cinematic equivalent of watching someone play a video game.
