The Craft (1996) Movie Review

Does The Craft hold up?

Let’s find out:

So we start off by meeting Sarah Bailey (Robin Tunney). Sarah is a student at a new school. We then meet Bonnie Harper (Neve Campbell). Bonnie is slightly less quiet during high school than I was. She is also undergoing burn therapy treatment. The therapy makes her scream, and…

Sidebar: What hospital would want one of its patients screaming? Wouldn’t that scare off visitors/other patients? If the treatment was going to be that painful, wouldn’t they put Bonnie under local or general anesthesia? Granted, I’ve never had burn therapy treatment before; but, still…

Anyway, we then meet Rochelle Zimmerman (Rachel True). Rochelle is putting up with some racist bullies.

We then meet Nancy Downs (Fairuza Balk). Nancy is in a poor financial situation, she has a weird stepfather who likes to look under her robe and Nancy looks like she is a regular visitor of her local mall’s Hot Topic.

Anyway, Rochelle, Nancy and Bonnie practice witchcraft.

We then meet Chris Hooker (Skeet Ulrich), and…

Have you ever known an actor from something else they did; but, you are not sure where? That actor for me is Skeet Ulrich.

Anyway, Sarah and Chris are interested in each other. It turns out that Sarah has some witchy power and Sarah, Nancy, Rochelle and Bonnie use their powers to make a car hit a vagrant because the vagrant was creeping Sarah out. We also find out that Sarah has made an attempt on her life.

Chris and Sarah go on a date and it is clear that Chris wants the date to go further than Sarah does; so, Chris starts the rumor that he and Sarah had er… ice cream… and he starts a rumor that Sarah sucked in the sack (that came out wrong). In retaliation, Sarah casts a love spell on Chris.

Rochelle casts a Carrie White spell on Laura Lizzie (her main racist bully) (Christine Taylor) and Laura’s hair falls out. Bonnie casts a spell to get rid of her burns and Nancy casts a spell to improve her financial situation. Nancy also offs her stepfather.

Nancy performs Invocation of the Spirit and she becomes more powerful. She also cares less about others.

Rochelle discovers that being Carrie White is not all that it’s cracked up to be as she discovers the effect that her spell had on Laura, and…

That is a great, great lesson for any bullied kid to learn.

…and Chris gets creepy with Sarah and he tries to take one of their dates a little too far. Nancy hears about Chris’ behavior and she goes to a high school party. A girl wearing what I can only describe as grandmother chic expresses amazement that Nancy is at the party. Nancy tries to have er… ice cream… with Chris; however, when this fails, Nancy performs a spell to make herself look like Sarah. The real Sarah interrupts this, Nancy goes all Lucille Sharpe in Crimson Peak and she offs Chris.

Sarah (unsuccessfully) tries to put a binding spell on Nancy. Bonnie and Rochelle turn on Sarah, and…

This is a bit out of the blue; but, a lot of friendships in elementary/middle/high school work this way (people change/people grow apart/people are immature/something drama-worthy happens/person B dumps person C so that person B can be friends with the more popular person A/be a part of person A’s clique).

Anyway, Nancy, Bonnie and Rochelle invade Sarah’s dreams. Nancy, Bonnie and Rochelle create an exterminator situation in Sarah’s home (Sarah’s home legitimately looks like an Indiana Jones set) and it appears that Sarah’s family died. Nancy tries to get Sarah suicidal and she even offers to make it an assisted suicide. Sarah makes it appear that Rochelle lost her hair and she scars Bonnie. Nancy yells indecipherable gibberish at Sarah, Sarah triumphs and she binds Nancy (probably nothing that a good laxative won’t fix).

It turns out that Sarah’s family being dead was just an illusion. The powerless Rochelle and Bonnie are all “We made you believe that your family was dead? What a great joke! Kids will be kids, right?;” however, Sarah is having none of it. Rochelle and Bonnie start to diss Sarah; however, Sarah literally and figuratively shows her power. We then find out that Nancy is in a mental hospital and that Nancy still believes that she has powers.

The Craft is still a good teen movie.
