Peter Pan (2003) Movie Review

Does Peter Pan hold up?

Let’s find out:

So we start off with Wendy Darling (a fantastic Rachel Hurd-Wood) entertaining John (Harry Newell) and Michael Darling (Freddie Popplewell) (her bros). Wendy tells John and Michael about Captain Hook (eventually Jason Isaacs) and Hook’s crew. We then meet Peter Pan (a great Jeremy Sumpter), and…

Sumpter and Hurd-Wood nail the “I’m not ready to be grown up yet and I’m kind of annoyed; but, I’m kind of starting to have feelings for you and I’m not hating it” feeling/vibe of a first crush. The two have chemistry and I would not be shocked if they were crushing on each other behind the scenes.

Anyway, we then meet Wendy’s Aunt Millicent (Lynn Redgrave). Peter loses his shadow at the Darling home. Wendy embarrasses her father (Jason Isaacs) at his work (Mr. Darling works at a bank).

Wendy helps Peter with his shadow. Peter takes Wendy, John and Michael to Neverland. However, Tinker Bell (Ludivine Sagnier) soon grows upset over Wendy. Tink tries to get the Lost Boys to off Wendy; however, Wendy makes it. Peter disavows Tink, and…

This is sounding like a kiddie version of a soap opera.

Anyway, Wendy becomes a sort of mother figure to the Lost Boys. We then meet Tiger Lily (Carsen Gray), and…

This character is going to be problematic; but, this is one of the least problematic versions of the character.

…and Hook captures John, Michael and Tiger Lily; however, Peter, Wendy and company are able to stop Hook and save John, Michael and Tiger Lily. A little bit of time passes and Peter and Wendy dance to a Ferrero Rocher commercial. Captain Hook manipulates Tinker Bell and Peter is all “I can’t be feeling feelings for Wendy!” Peter tries to stop Wendy from leaving Neverland, and…

This is how Peter Pan on Once Upon a Time got started.

Anyway, Wendy starts to convince John and Michael that they need to leave Neverland. The Lost Boys are also pro-leaving Neverland. Hook tampers with Peter’s medicine, Tinker Bell takes one for the team and we get the famous scene where Peter convinces the audience to believe in fairies and magic. Hook also took Wendy and company hostage; but, Peter works on rescuing them. Hook is all “Wendy’s doomed by canon to find somebody else, Peter” and his psychological ploys work on Peter. However, Wendy’s kiss saves Peter from death’s door step, and…

Sounds like a Celine Dion song.

Anyway, a crocodile gets Hook. Peter uses the Jolly Roger to take Wendy, John and Michael home. The Lost Boys are adopted. Peter tells Wendy that he will be back and Wendy is all “He ghosted me!”; however, Wendy reveals that she still keeps Peter’s story alive.

Still my favorite Peter Pan adaptation.
