Does Easy A hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting Olive Penderghast (a fantastic Emma Stone). Olive is your self-aware “I’m not like other high school characters” high school character that, ironically enough, is starting to become a trope.
Anyway, Olive is trying to avoid spending time with Rhiannon Abernathy (Aly Michalka, trying so, so desperately to shed her Phil of the Future/Disney image)’s hippie/nudist parents; so, she tells Rhiannon that she has a date. This eventually escalates to a lie starting that Olive lost her virginity to a college boy.
We then meet Marianne Bryant (Amanda Bynes), and…
Full disclosure: I am related to ministers; so, I may use that professional courtesy not to comment on this character. Plus, I know that some Christians are like this in real life; but, this kind of character has literally and figuratively been done to death in Stephen King movies.
Anyway, Marianne spreads the rumor and she decides to save Olive from herself. Brandon (Dan Byrd) finds out the truth; however, Brandon is getting bullied for being homosexual; so, he asks Olive to pretend to have sex with him and she complies.
Olive is all “If you can’t beat them? Join them” and she embraces her newfound reputation. Boys pretend like they had sex with her and Olive earns compensation for her services in the form of store gift cards.
However, things soon unravel when Micah (Cam Gigandet) gets chlamydia from having relations with Mrs. Griffith (Michele… just kidding…Lisa Kudrow) and Michah throws Olive under the bus for it. However, Olive agrees to be thrown under the bus because Mrs. Griffith is married to Mr. Griffith (Lyle Van de Groot… just kidding… Thomas Haden Church) and Olive wants to save their marriage.
Things escalate further when a group of kids starts protesting Olive. Things escalate even further when Anson (Jake Sandvig) thinks that Olive is a prostitute and he tries to take his date with her a little too far.
However, Olive has a bright spot in Todd (Penn Badgley). Olive tries to get Mrs. Griffith to tell the truth, Mrs. Griffith refuses; so, Olive reveals Mrs. Griffith’s secret to Mr. Griffith.
At a pep rally, Olive promises more sexcapades; however, she eventually comes clean. Todd comes by and Olive is all “No one is going to know when Todd and I have er… ice cream.” Olive reconciles with Rhiannon. She gets together with Todd, and…
I’m not sure if winding up with Joe Goldberg qualifies as a happy ending (Olive may spend the rest of her life being stalked); but, movie’s over; so…
Easy A is a fun, self-aware high school comedy with a winning turn from Emma Stone.
