Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) Movie Review

Does Spider-Man: Far From Home hold up?

Let’s find out:

So we start off by reuniting with Peter Parker/Spider-Man (a great Tom Holland). Peter is going to Europe with his class and he plans to give MJ (a great Zendaya) a black dahlia necklace. Ned Leeds (Jacob Batalon) and Betty Brant (Angourie Rice) become a couple. Aunt May (Marisa Tomei) and Happy Hogan (Jon Favreau) are dating.

We discover that Peter has been dodging Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and that Peter is still reeling from Tony Stark’s death. We also discover that Peter has a rival for MJ in the form of Brad Davis (Remy Hii).

Venice gets an unfriendly visit from The Shape of Water. A new hero shows the monster who is boss and the hero is branded Mysterio. Fury gives Peter technological glasses (E.D.I.T.H.). Peter then gets a proper introduction to Mysterio/Quentin Beck (a great Jake Gyllenhaal) and we reunite with Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders). We find out that Mysterio is not exactly from around here, that he has been dealing with an elemental problem and that Fury wants Peter’s help in defeating the fire elemental. Peter is reluctant.

Peter has an E.D.I.T.H accident that almost offs Brad Davis and Fury is not a happy camper. Mysterio/Beck acts as a surrogate father/surrogate Tony Stark figure to Peter.

Peter tries to distract his class with an opera performance; but, MJ follows him and Ned and Betty follow after MJ. Beck figuratively and literally plays with fire. Fury is mad at Peter, Peter gets despondent, he gives E.D.I.T.H to Beck and Beck is totally villainous, guys.

We find out that Beck is a crazy ex-Stark employee. Tony (back in the day) (for some reason) nicknamed Beck’s technology BARF and Beck is not that sane; so, Beck is working with a bunch of people (including Mr. Box of Scraps). Beck gives a superhero-dissing speech, and…

You know those articles with Martin Scorsese or other filmmakers dissing Marvel films? This feels like the cinematic equivalent of that.

Anyway, Beck has decided to jump on the bandwagon.

We find out that MJ knows the truth about Peter and Peter finds out the truth about Mysterio. We learn that Beck is planning an elemental attack on London. Peter goes to Berlin to let Nick Fury know about Mysterio; however, Mysterio is in control. Mysterio puts Peter through some psychological torture before he (Mysterio) figures out that Betty, Ned and MJ know the truth. Peter almost gets Murder on the Orient Express’d; however, Happy Hogan helps him and he gives Peter a pep talk.

Mysterio is attacking London. Peter battles him and he re-gains control of E.D.I.T.H. Beck pulls a Green Goblin in the first Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie and he dies. MJ finally gets the black dahlia necklace and she shares a very sweet kiss with Peter.

We then get a cameo from J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, Mysterio blames Peter for the mess and he tells the world that Peter is Spider-Man.

We then find out that a Skrull has been impersonating Nick Fury during the entire movie so that the real Nick Fury can take a space vacation/do some space work. Unshaved Mouse said that they thought that this plot twist was worked into the movie to explain Fury’s idiotic behavior and I agree.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is still a good movie. It is kind of like The Lizzie McGuire Movie. It feels like a John Hughes movie.
