Does Return to Me hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting Bob (a fantastic David Duchovny) and Elizabeth Rueland (a fantastic Joely Richardson), and…
Elizabeth is (obviously) dead meat; but, Richardson’s performance, Richardson’s chemistry with Duchovny and the writing help to make the character more than obvious dead meat.
Anyway, we then meet artsy fartsy Grace Briggs (a fantastic Minnie Driver). Elizabeth dies and Grace gets Elizabeth’s heart.
Time passes. Bob’s friend Charlie (David Alan Grier) has Bob go on a disastrous date. But, the date is not a total disaster. Bob is attracted to Grace (the waitress that attended to him on his date). We also meet Marty O’Reilly (Carroll O’Connor).
Grace and Bob begin a relationship. Grace finds out that she has Elizabeth’s heart, and…
I do love that the main conflict in this rom-com is not the usual you’re still hung up on your ex/your ex ambush- kissed you/your job offer takes you away from me/you lied to me about x/y/z rom-com misunderstanding in rom-coms; but, I have your dead wife’s heart/You have my dead wife’s heart.
Anyway, Bob finds out the truth. Grace goes to Italy, Bob follows her and they rekindle things.
We end with the wedding of Wally and Sophie.
Return to Me is a good, charming rom-com.
