Does Captain America: The First Avenger hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting HYDRA and Johann Schmidt (Hugo Weaving)/ the Red Skull. The Red Skull finds the tesseract.
We then meet Steve Rogers (a perfectly-cast Chris Evans). Steve is trying to join the military; but, he is about as healthy as I am.
Steve then gets into a fight at the movie theater with someone who does not have the patriotic spirit. James “Bucky” Barnes (Sebastian Stan)/ a Sergeant in the 107th Infantry saves Steve and the two go with dates to the Stark Expo. At the Stark Expo, we meet Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, great at capturing the Stark spirit).
We then find out that Steve is considering lying to join the military. Bucky tries to talk him out of this; but, Steve wants to contribute and he thinks that the ends do justify the means. We then meet Doctor Abraham Erskine (a fantastic Stanley Tucci) and we find out that Steve is a decent man.
We then meet Colonel Chester Phillips (Tommy Lee Jones, at his Tommy Lee Jones-iest) and Agent Peggy Carter (a fantastic Hayley Atwell). Phillips has a grenade drill/test and Steve pulls a Harold Whitehurst in Child’s Play 3.
We then find out that Steve is a good man and that Schmidt was not (duh). Steve goes through the Super Soldier experiment and he transforms into buff Chris Evans. A Nazi turns Erskine into Steve’s personal Uncle Ben Parker. Peggy takes down the Nazi’s driver like a boss. Steve captures the Nazi; but, the Nazi was set to self-destruct.
We then get The Star Spangled Man With the Plan montage. The 107th Infantry treats Steve the same way that a bunch of eighth grade boys would. Steve saves Bucky and a ton of other people from Hydra.
Steve continues to battle against HYDRA. Peggy turns into Alex Forrest from Fatal Attraction after she catches Steve kissing someone else (not his idea). Peggy tries to shoot him, and…
I could just see the Lifetime movie now: Captain’s Temptation or Red, White and Deadly Blue.
Anyway, Steve and company then catch Armin Zola (Toby James). Bucky “dies.” We find out that the Red Skull is using the tesseract to go on a bombing spree. Cap battles the Skull and the tesseract offs the Skull.
Cap realizes that he has to get the bomber in the water. He talks to Peggy and the two make plans to dance.
Steve winds up in the hospital. He quickly figures out that something is wrong, he finds that he is in modern times and he meets Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson).
Captain America: The First Avenger is well-cast and well-written. It is reminiscent of the Christopher Reeve Superman movies and the Indiana Jones movies.
