50 First Dates (2004) Movie Review

Does 50 First Dates hold up?

Let’s find out:

So we start off by meeting womanizing veterinarian Henry Roth (Adam Sandler). Henry has breakfast with Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore). Henry and Lucy make plans to have breakfast again.

However, Lucy has forgotten Henry. We find out that Lucy had gone to get a pineapple for  Marlin (Blake Clark)- her dad. We find out that a cow started an accident and, in the accident, Lucy received amnesia, and…

Am I a monster, or, is the cow causing the accident kind of darkly funny?

Anyway, we find out that Lucy only remembers her life before the accident. She is able to keep some memories during the day; but, she loses them at night. Because of this, Marlin and Doug (Sean Astin) (Lucy’s bro) are stuck Groundhog Day-ing Marlin’s birthday, and…

Major, major props to this dad and brother, by the way.

Henry still wants to have breakfast with Lucy. Marlin and Doug want to stop the Henry/Lucy relationship. Henry finds ways to run into Lucy. Marlin and Doug become Henry/Lucy shippers when Lucy starts crooning “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by the Beach Boys.

Lucy finds out the truth about her condition; but, Henry believes that this is a good thing and that she shouldn’t be kept in the dark about her condition. Henry works on a system on keeping Lucy up to date. However, their relationship is threatened because Henry gets a career opportunity. Mandatory third-act rom-com break-up ensues and Lucy decides to forget Henry.

We find out that Lucy is able to keep some new memories and we find out that she dreams about Henry.

Henry and Lucy get together, they get married, Lucy is kept up-to-date on her condition, Henry and Lucy have a daughter (Nicole), and…

Plenty has been made on the horror of Lucy waking up pregnant without knowing why she is pregnant; but, aside from that, 50 First Dates is an Adam Sandler movie with heart.
