Does Lilo & Stitch hold up?

Let’s find out:

 So we start off with Galactic Federation on  Turo.

The Grand Councilwoman (voiced by Zoe Caldwell) and Captain Gantu (voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson) are overseeing the legal proceedings for Doctor Jumba Jookiba (voiced by David Ogden Stiers).

We then meet Experiment #626/Stitch (voiced by Chris Sanders). Stitch says “Meega na la Kweesta,” the Councilwoman leaves Stitch to Gantu, Stitch steals a red ship, he lands on Ee-arth and the Councilwoman is ready to commit mass homicide to get rid of Stitch. However, Pleakley (voiced by Kevin MacDonald) talks the Councilwoman out of the mass homicide for the sake of the mosquitoes, and…

Will no one think of the mosquitoes?

The Councilwoman leaves taking care of Stitch to Jumba and Pleakley. 

We then meet Lilo (voiced by a fantastic Daveigh Chase). Lilo does not want to feed Pudge (her fish) a Hannibal Lecter diet because Pudge is a weather-controlling entity, and…

This kid has psychological problems.

A little girl handles Lilo’s trauma from the death of her parents the way that a kid would, the girl calls Lilo cuckoo and Lilo retaliates in response. Lilo later tries to reconcile and she shows Myrtle (the bully girl) Scrump. Scrump looks like Chucky’s long-lost relative; so, the girls abandon her. Lilo (briefly) disowns Scrump before she quickly re-owns Scrump.

We then meet Nani (voiced by a fantastic Tia Carrere)/Lilo’s older sister. Lilo is having a depressive episode. Cobra Bubbles (voiced by Ving Rhames), a social worker, is (naturally) coming over to check on things. Cobra gives Nani a three-day extension before he leaves. Nani and Lilo have a fight. Nani and Lilo reconcile. Lilo wants a friend and Stitch enters the picture. 

Stitch winds up in a dog pound and he pretends to be a dog to impress Lilo. Lilo picks him for her dog and Stitch uses Lilo to protect himself from Jumba. 

Montage time! We get a montage to Stuck on You by Elvis Presley.

We then meet David (voiced by Jason Scott Lee), who has a crush on Nani. Stitch makes Lilo lose her job when he attacks Pleakley.  Nani, Lilo and Stitch go home and Stitch starts trashing everything… until he finds the story of the Ugly Duckling. 

The next day, Cobra visits. He wants Nani to fins a new job and, after Stitch attacks him, Cobra wants Stitch to behave better. Montage time! We get a montage to You’re the Devil in Disguise by Elvis Presley. The montage ends with Nani being jobless due to circumstances and Stitch barely improving his behavior due to circumstances.

David finds Nani, Lilo and Stitch and he offers to cheer up the trio by taking them surfing. This is set to Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride. Jumba ruins things and Cobra, unlike other movie characters, expresses sympathy for Nani; however, he tells her that Lilo needs a new home.

Nani and Lilo return home. Nani sings  “Aloha Oe” to Lilo. Stitch has a realization and he leaves. The Grand Councilwoman fires Jumba, Jumba finds Stitch; however, Stitch evades him. It looks like David has found a job for Nani; however, Jumba and Stitch wind up wrecking Nani’s home.

Cobra is ready to take Lilo away; but, Lilo escapes in the chaos. Stitch reveals his alien nature to Lilo. Captain Gantu captures Lilo and Stitch; but, Stitch is able to get away. Stitch talks Jumba into helping and we get some ship-to-ship combat with Jumba and Captain Gantu.

The Grand Councilwoman captures Stitch and Stitch introduces Lilo and Nani to the Grand Councilwoman as his family. The Grand Councilwoman decides to let Stitch stay with Lilo and Nani. Cobra, Pleakley and Jumba HGTV Nani’s home and Nani, Lilo, David and Stitch start a life as a family.

Lilo & Stitch still holds up. It is deep, dark (in some spots) and heartwarming. The film has fantastic writing, fantastic performances and a great sense of humor. The sister relationship between Lilo and Nani is believable.
