Does The Incredible Hulk hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off with Bruce Banner (Edward Norton)’s transformation into the Hulk, Bruce hurts Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) and he winds up in Brazil.
Bruce works at a bottling plant and he corresponds with a Mr. Blue. Bruce sends Mr. Blue a blood sample.
Bruce helps Martina (Débora Nascimento) when a high school bully as an adult type flirts with her. The high school bully gets upset at Bruce.
General Ross (William Hurt) finds out that Bruce is at the bottling plant. including Ross enlists Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) and other soldiers. Blonsky is skeptical about Banner; but, Ross tells Blonsky not to judge a book by its cover. We discover that Mr. Blue needs more data.
Bruce tricks the military and Blonsky does his best impression of the Wicked Witch of the West by tranquilizing Bruce’s dog. Martina helps Bruce. Bruce runs into the high school bully and the bully’s friends. Bruce winds up at the bottling plant and he offs the bully and the bully’s friends before he (Bruce) leaves.
Blonsky wants more information on the Hulk; but, Ross is reluctant. Ross and Blonsky go back to the United States.
Bruce winds up in Guatemala.
We find out from Ross that the Hulk was created from the Super Soldier program. Ross offers to Hulk Blonsky and Blonsky accepts.
Bruce winds up in Virginia. He stays with Stanley, who owns a pizza place. Stanley helps Bruce get onto Culver University and we get a Lou Ferrigno cameo. Betty gives Bruce the data that he needs.
Bruce tries to leave again; but, Ross and company trap him. Ross and Blonsky go after the Hulk; but, the Hulk overpowers them. The Hulk saves Betty from an exploding helicopter.
Bruce and Betty do their best impression of Jesse and Jade from Bride of Chucky and they shack up at a cheap motel. We find out that the Hulk keeps Bruce from… er… eating ice cream, and…
If being the Incredible Hulk lasts longer for you than four hours, please consult your doctor.
Bruce and Betty wind up in New York. We find out that Mr. Blue is Doctor Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson), and…
You have had a high school science teacher or college science professor who acts like Sterns, I promise you.
Anyway, Sterns has a possible cure for Bruce; however, the cure is experimental. Ross has found Bruce. Sterns has defied science and has been able to create more of Bruce’s blood than Bruce gave him. Sterns is trying to do this for the greater good and you have seen this in twenty million superhero movies. Bruce is taken away and Blonsky makes Sterns Hulk (Abomination?) him out. We get a tease for Sterns that, to my knowledge, has not officially happened.
We then get a Hulk vs. Abomination battle. Hulk wins (of course).
Bruce winds up in British Columbia and he Hulks out.
The Incredible Hulk is an underrated MCU movie. It reminded me of a Universal monster movie and it would’ve been better if it had committed to that aspect more. The film does have problems (Norton and Liv Tyler struggle with chemistry).
