Does Heathers hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder). Veronica is part of the Heathers: Heather Duke (Shannen Doherty), Heather McNamara (Lisanne Falk) and Heather Chandler (Kim Walker). Jason “J.D.” Dean (Christian Slater) scares Kurt (Lance Fenton) and Ram (Patrick Labyorteaux).
J.D. jokingly offers to give Heather Chandler drain cleaner and Veronica makes her orange juice and milk. However, the cups are mixed up, Heather drinks the drain cleaner and J.D. decides to frame her death as a suicide and Heather Duke becomes the new queen bee.
McNamara, Veronica, Kurt and Ram go on dates; however, Veronica leaves with J.D. Kurt and Ram fire up the rumor mill and they start an oral sex rumor about Veronica. J.D. plans revenge by giving Kurt and Ram tranquilizers and making it look like Kurt and Ram were lovers and that they killed themselves. It is weird seeing Andrew Garvey from Little House on the Prairie in his skivvies.
Anyway, J.D. is able to get Ram; but, Kurt gets away from Veronica. J.D. gets him back towards Veronica, Veronica shoots Kurt and she discovers that J.D. murdered Kurt and Ram. Realizing that things are going too far, Veronica starts distancing herself from J.D.
J.D. works on a mass suicide note. Martha Dunnstock (Carrie Lynn) tries to (unsuccessfully) off herself.
Heather Duke arranges for the bullying of Heather McNamara. Heather McNamara tries to off herself; but, Veronica stops her.
Anyway, Veronica finds out that she is next on J.D.’s list; so, she fakes her death and she (Veronica) finds out that J.D. has some deadly plans for a pep rally.
Veronica stops J.D.’s plans and J.D. offs himself. Veronica plans a movie sleepover for her and Martha.
Side bar: I love the nightmare sequence in this movie. The white clothes/white robes, the 3-D glasses, the cinematography, Glenn Shadix’s nightmare acting, etc.
This is R-rated Mean Girls. If you got through high school, you will recognize the jocks, the mean girls and the cynical nerds and you will appreciate a lot of the movie. A lot of the dialogue is sharp and Winona Ryder and her character are very relatable. I also appreciated that the character of J.D. was not overly-romanticized. I liked the movie; but, there is an uncomfortable undercurrent to this movie in the wake of real-life school shootings.
