Child’s Play (1988) Movie Review

Does Child’s Play hold up?

Let’s find out:

So we start off with Detective Mike Norris (a game Chris Sarandon) chasing mass murderer Charles Lee “Chucky” Ray (played and voiced by Brad Dourif) into the creepiest toy store since the toy aisle at Meijer. Norris kills Ray and Ray transfers his soul into a doll.

We then meet Karen Barclay (the fantastic Catherine Hicks). We also meet Karen’s son Andy Barclay (Alex Vincent) and Andy wants the same type of doll that Ray transferred his soul into.

The dolls are pricey; but, Karen’s bestie Maggie Peterson (Dinah Manoff, playing Maggie like she is the best friend in a rom-com) snags a cheap one from a hobo for Karen.

That night, Maggie babysits Andy and Chucky kills Maggie. Norris thinks that Andy did it and, when Chucky kills again, Andy is once again blamed.

Karen returns home, and…

Catherine Hicks is great in this scene. She is a woman who has had her kid taken away from her, she has to face the possibility that her kid might be evil AND she’s trying to believe in the impossibility of a killer doll. A+ acting.

However, Chucky comes alive. Karen tries to convince Norris; but, Norris does not believe her until an over-the-top car chase.

We then meet Dr. Death (Raymond Oliver), and…

Yeah, this character has not aged that great.

Anyway, Chucky kills Dr. Death.

Chucky then tracks Andy down to a mental institution, Chucky kills Dr. Ardmore (Jack Colvin), Dr. Ardmore looks like raw hamburger, Andy goes home, Chucky follows him and we get a big battle (Chucky vs. Norris, Karen and Andy) and Norris shoots Chucky dead.

Child’s Play is a fun killer doll movie.
