Does Overboard hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting spoiled Joanna Stayton (the fantastic Goldie Hawn). Joanna has a husband (Grant Stayton III (the fantastic Edward Herrmann)) and she has a yacht. She hires carpenter Dean Proffitt (the fantastic Kurt Russell) to do some work on her yacht; however, she is dissatisfied with Dean’s work and she refuses to pay him. Later, Joanna falls overboard, she gets amnesia and Grant dumps her.
Seeing an opportunity, Dean kidnaps Joanna, gives her the identity Annie, makes her the mom of his four sons:
1. Porn-addict Travis (Brian Price)
2. Illiterate Joey (Jeffrey Wiseman)
3. Charlie (Jared Rushton) and Greg (Jamie Wild)
Anyway, Joanna has trouble doing chores, and…
Fun fact: When I saw this movie when I was a kid, I always felt bad for my mom and I helped out around the house more.
However, she helps Joey read. Dean acts like a decent human being when Joanna/Annie gets poison ivy and Joanna/Annie learns that Dean is a hard worker. Joanna/Annie helps Dean work on his miniature golf course and Dean becomes a smitten kitten for Joanna/Annie. However, Joanna’s mother threatens Grant if he does not find Joanna; so, he finds her, Joanna/Annie’s memory comes back and we get the mandatory third-act rom-com break-up.
Joanna/Annie despises her old life. She wants to return to Dean; but, Grant stops her. Dean comes to get her, Joanna/Annie and Dean jump off their respective boats and they profess their love for each other. Joanna/Annie reveals that she wants a daughter.
Overboard is a creepy concept and it would never get made today; but, I did like it. Hawn and Russell (obviously) have chemistry. The boys/sons are all written like 1980s stereotypes. If you like rom-coms/Hallmark Channel movies, you’ll probably like it.
