Is The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning any good?
Let’s find out:
So we start off with the death of Queen Athena (voiced by Lorelei Hill Butters)- Ariel’s mom, and…
That was a bold move, huh?
Anyway, King Triton (voiced by Jim Cummings) is so depressed over Athena’s death that he swears off music from his kingdom.
Years pass and we meet Marina Del Rey (voiced by Sally “What are you doing in this movie?” Field). Marina is the governess to Ariel (voiced by Jodi Benson) and Ariel’s sisters (Attina, Alana, Adella, Aquata, Arista and Andrina). Marina hates her job and she desires to be Triton’s attaché; however, Sebastian (voiced by Samuel E. Wright) has that job. Marina is also Ursula Lite.
Anyway, Ariel meets Flounder (voiced by Parker Goris) and they find music, courtesy of Sebastian. Ariel dances to Jump In the Line because she wants to be Lydia from Beetlejuice, apparently. Ariel also has her sisters come. Not-Ursula finds out, she tells Triton, Triton imprisons Sebastian and Flounder, and…
Harsh, dude.
Anyway, Ariel stages a prison break for Flounder and Sebastian. Sebastian sends Ariel after her dead mother’s music box. Ariel is determined to stop Not-Ursula; however, Not-Ursula sends Not-Flotsam and Not-Jetsam after Ariel.
Ariel saves Sebastian from Not-Ursula; however, Ariel “dies.” Triton decides to embrace music and Ariel comes back to life.
Music has the power to save lives, apparently.
Anyway, Triton imprisons Not-Ursula, music is made legal and Sebastian is now court composer.
The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning does some bold stuff with Queen Athena’s death; however, a lot of it is a poor man’s The Little Mermaid. It is Little Mermaid filler and Marina is too similar to Ursula; however, it does have some funny moments.
