Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World (1998) Movie Review

Is Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World any good?

Let’s find out:

So we start off by reuniting with John Smith (voiced by Donal Gibson). Ratcliffe (voiced by David Ogden Stiers) (apparently) kills John Smith. Ratcliffe wants to murder the Indians; however, King James VI and I wants John Rolfe (voiced by Billy Zane) to get the Indian Chief before Ratcliffe goes off the edge.

We then reunite with Pocahontas (voiced by Irene Bedard), who is having fun with Nakoma (voiced by Michelle St. John).

We then get Where Do I Go From Here?, and…

I liked Where Do I Go From Here? as a kid and I like it as an adult.

Anyway, Pocahontas rescues a colonist; however, the colonist labels her a savage. The Powhatans and the colonists get ready to face off; however, Rolfe and Pocahontas resolve things.

Rolfe sees the Powhatans and he gives Pocahontas a horse. Rolfe wants Chief Powhatan to go with him; however, Chief Powhatan wants no part in it. Pocahontas; however, is more interested and she says goodbye to Nakoma.

We then get What a Day in London, and…

Unshaved Mouse said that this song was basically Belle and he was right.

Anyway, Pocahontas runs into Ratcliffe and she gets angry. Rolfe and Pocahontas go to Rolfe’s home and Pocahontas meets Mrs. Jenkins. Rolfe goes to see the king, he encourages the King to meet Pocahontas and Ratcliffe villain suggests that Pocahontas go to the Hunt Ball. Mrs. Jenkins sings Wait ‘Til He Sees You and Rolfe replaces the necklace that Pocahontas’ father gave to her with a gold one.

Ball time! Rolfe and Pocahontas dance; however, Ratcliffe takes Rolfe’s place and things get awkward real fast. Ratcliffe taunts Pocahontas with a bear baiting, she (Pocahontas) gets upset, she labels the court savages, the king gets upset and Pocahontas ends up in the tower.

Surprise! John Smith is not dead and he and Rolfe rescue Pocahontas, and…

Hear me out: It would have been revolutionary for John to stay dead. A dead Disney prince/Disney prince wannabe/Disney love interest? How often does that happen??

Anyway, Rolfe and Smith argue, Pocahontas gets upset and Smith realizes that Rolfe loves Pocahontas. Pocahontas decides to remain true to herself, and…

All Disney Princess movies have the same lesson. They’re like Hallmark Christmas movies.

Anyway, Pocahontas goes to see the king and Pocahontas is wearing her normal clothes and her father’s necklace. Queen Anne convinces the king to give Pocahontas a chance, Pocahontas shows Ratcliffe for the scoundrel that he is, Pocahontas dumps John Smith, and…

That is revolutionary; however, it would have also been revolutionary for John to stay dead. I am just saying.

Anyway, Rolfe and Pocahontas wind up together.

Sidebar 1: Am I the only one that thinks that Percy (the dog sidekick) looks like Chucky? Chucky-Dog?

Sidebar 2: The real Ratcliffe was apparently really generous to the Indians and he died a horrible death.

Guys, Pocahontas II: Journey to a New World is actually a good Disney sequel. I liked it as a kid and I liked it as an adult. I like it more than the original Pocahontas. I am not a history buff; but, for a Disney sequel, it is pretty good.
