I liked Spider-Man 2 when I was a kid; but, does it hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off with Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) using his amazing powers to deliver pizza, and…
Um… yay?
We then discover at Peter’s birthday party that he has the following problems:
1. Harry Osborn (James Franco), Peter’s best friend, is still obsessing over the death of his (Harry’s) father Norman Osborn (Willem Dafoe).
2. Aunt May (Rosemary Harris) is having financial problems and she is still reeling over the death of Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson).
3. Mary Jane Watson/MJ (Kirsten Dunst) is seeing John Jameson (Daniel Gillies), and…
Am… am I the only one that thinks that John Jameson got a bad deal? John is a decent guy, he’s not cheating on MJ, he’s not after her for financial reasons because MJ is broke and he shows concern for Mary Jane when Doc Ock (a fantastic Alfred Molina) kidnaps her. #JohnJamesondeservedbetter.
We then meet Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus, who is trying to create the power of the sun.
Shortly after this, Peter tries to attend Mary Jane’s play; however, he gets stalled.
Back to the Otto storyline.
Otto’s sun experiment goes awry and we get the famous octopus arms. Otto’s wife, Rosie Octavius (Donna Murphy), dies.
We then get the famous horror surgery scene.
We then get the famous bank robbery scene and the aftermath.
Shortly after that, Mary Jane and John Jameson get engaged.
Shortly after that, Peter quits being Spider-Man.
Peter then tells Aunt May his role in Uncle Ben’s death, and…
Tobey Maguire is really, really good in this scene.
Anyway, Doc Ock kidnaps Mary Jane. We get the famous subway battle, Doc Ock delivers Peter to Harry and Harry discovers that Peter is Spider-Man. Peter goes to Doc Ock’s lair, he talks Doc Ock into stopping his experiment, Doc Ock dies and Mary Jane discovers that Peter is Spider-Man.
Back to the Harry storyline.
Harry discovers Norman’s lair.
Back to the Mary Jane storyline.
Mary Jane leaves John Jameson at the altar, and…
I read in a Disney Adventures magazine when I was a kid that they were setting up John Jameson to be Venom in Spider-Man 3; but, obviously, it did not pan out.
Anyway, Mary Jane visits Peter. She tells Peter that she cannot survive without him, and…
Truer words have never been spoken.
Anyway, Mary Jane and Peter declare their love for each other and Peter goes on his next mission.
Even though it is a little campy, Spider-Man 2 is still one of the best superhero movies.
