The Little Mermaid was one of my top three favorite Disney movies when I was a kid; but, does it hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting Prince Eric (voiced by Christopher Daniel Barnes), and…
I know that Eric gets a lot of hate; however, he does make fun of his butler and Barnes does give him some personality.
We then meet King Triton (voiced by Kenneth Mars). We also meet Sebastian (voiced by Samuel E. Wright).
Anyway, Triton is excited about the concert for Ariel (voiced by a fantastic Jodi Benson)- his daughter; however, Ariel skips out on the concert to treasure hunt with Flounder (voiced by Jason Marin).
Ariel and Flounder are attacked by a shark; however, they escape and talk to Scuttle (voiced by Buddy Hackett).
We then meet Ursula (voiced by a fantastic Pat Carroll).
Anyway, Triton is worried about Ariel interacting with the human world. We then get Part of Your World and it is a fantastic song.
Ariel then rescues Eric and Sebastian tries to convince her to stay under water with Under the Sea. However, Flounder has gotten Ariel a statue of Eric. Triton sees the statue, goes nuts, destroys the statue and Ariel goes to see Ursula.
We then get the fantastic Poor Unfortunate Souls.
Anyway, Ursula makes a deal with Ariel:
1. If Ariel makes Eric fall in love with her within three days, she (Ariel) will stay a human.
2. If Ariel does not make Eric fall in love with her within three days, Ariel will belong to Ursula.
Ursula also takes Ariel’s voice.
Anyway, Eric finds Ariel and shenanigans ensue.
We then get the fun and bouncy Kiss the Girl.
Ursula then takes the form of Vanessa (voiced by Jodi Benson) and she tricks Eric into getting engaged to her. Vanessa and Eric’s wedding starts and Scuttle attacks the wedding. Ariel arrives, she gets her voice back, Eric realizes that he loves her, Ariel turns back into a mermaid and Ursula kidnaps her.
Triton arrives and he takes Ariel’s place as Ursula’s hostage. Ursula grows massive; however, Eric impales her with a ship.
Triton decides to let Ariel go, he turns her human, Ariel and Eric get married and Ariel tells Triton that she loves him.
The Little Mermaid is still a classic.
