I liked The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement when I was a kid; but, does it hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by reuniting with Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway). Mia meets Lord Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine) at a birthday party. Nicholas is the nephew of Viscount Mabrey (John Rhys-Davies) and he (Nicholas) is line for Mia’s throne unless Mia marries.
Mia decides to marry Andrew Jacoby (Callum Blue); however, Mabrey instructs Nicholas to romance Mia. Mia and Nicholas get stuck in a closet and Pine re-enacts the trailer for Lights Out.
Anyway, Clarisse (Julie Andrews) gives Mia a wooden leg so that she can ride sidesaddle for a ceremony. Mabrey spooks Mia’s horse, revealing Mia’s wooden leg in the process, and…
The dress that Mia/Anne Hathaway wears in this scene looks like something that Belle from Beauty and the Beast would rock.
Anyway, Mia and Nicholas kiss at a garden party.
Parade time! Mia sees a little orphan girl being bullied at the parade, and…
She probably had flashbacks to when Lana bullied her in the first film.
Mia has the little orphan girl and the rest of the orphanage be princes/princesses in the parade. Mia then has plans for a children’s center, and..
Paul Williams is in this scene; so, Princess Diaries and Phantom of the Paradise are (apparently) in the same cinematic universe.
Sleepover time!
Okay, the sleepover scene screams that the cast and crew wanted to have a sleepover and that they wanted to make Disney pay for it. Also, Disney wanted this to be a big movie for sleepovers.
Anyway, back to the main story.
Mia and Nicholas sleep together in the literal sense of the phrase; however, Mabrey and the press try to spin it that Mia and Nicholas slept together in the figurative sense of the phrase.
Mia and Andrew decide to carry on with the wedding; however, Mia decides not to go through with the wedding and she convinces the Genovian parliament that she can be queen. Nicholas decides that he just can wait to be king and Clarisse and Joe (Héctor Elizondo) get married.
Mia becomes queen of Genovia, she and Nicholas get together and Mia opens her children’s center.
I’ve always said that Garry Marshall films need a better editor; however, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement is still a fun flick and Hathaway and Pine have chemistry.
