The Princess Diaries (2001) Movie Review

I liked The Princess Diaries when I was a kid; but, does it hold up?

Let’s find out:

So we start off by meeting Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway). Mia lives with Helen Thermopolis (Caroline Goodall), her mom.

Mia has a crush on Josh Bryant (Erik von Detten) and Lana Thomas (Mandy Moore) bullies her.

Mia’s best friend is Lilly Moscovitz (Heather Matarazzo) and Lilly’s brother Michael Moscovitz (Robert Schwartzman) has a crush on Mia.

Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews), Mia’s grandmother, arrives. Clarisse tells Mia that she is a princess and she gives Mia princess lessons.

Clarisse then gives Mia a She’s All That-style makeover and, despite Clarisse and Mia’s best efforts, everyone finds out that Mia is a princess.

Mia has a disastrous first state dinner; however, she and Clarisse spend some quality time together.

Josh and Mia go to a beach party. Josh kisses her and we find out that he was only interested because Mia was a princess.

Lana arranges for the paparazzi to take a photo of a towel-wearing Mia, and…

Grown men trying to take a photo of a fifteen-year-old in a towel? Nothing creepy about that.

Anyway, Clarisse is livid; however, she calms down. Mia tries to run from publicly renouncing her throne; however, Joe saves her. Mia becomes the princess of Genovia, she and Michael get together and she goes to Genovia.

The Princess Diaries is still a charming fairy tale.
