I liked Ella Enchanted when I was a kid; but, does it hold up?
Let’s find out:
So we start off by meeting Ella and Lucinda (Vivica A. Fox) gives Ella the gift of obedience.
Ella’s mom (Donna Dent) dies and Ella is now played by Anne Hathaway. Ella’s dad (Patrick Bergin) marries Dame Olga (Joanna Lumley), and…
Huh. I guess that Patrick Bergin is really sleeping with the enemy now, huh?
Anyway, Dame Olga has two daughters:
1. Hattie (Lucy Punch)
2. Olive (Jennifer Higham), and…
Hattie and Olive look like they shop at Claire’s in the mall.
Anyway, Hattie has a crush on Prince “Char” Charmont (Hugh Dancy); however, Char only has eyes for Ella. Char is the nephew of Sir Edgar (Cary Elwes).
Anyway, Hattie makes Ella shoplift and she makes Ella hurt her best friend; so, Ella leaves to break her obedience curse.
Ella meets elf Slannen (Aidan McArdle) and Edgar is forcing elves to be entertainers; however, Slannen wants to be a lawyer. Shrek was a big thing at the time; so, Ella and Slannen are attacked by ogres; however, Char saves them. Char sees that his uncle is mistreating the giants and he and Ella grow closer.
Edgar finds out about Ella’s obedience curse from Hattie; so, he tells Ella that he murdered Char’s father and he orders Ella to kill Char. Ella has Slannen chain her to a tree; however, Lucinda “frees” her. Char finds Ella, he proposes to her, Ella tries to resist her orders, and…
Anne Hathaway is fantastic in this scene. Trying desperately to fight her curse, her emotional scenes, her final triumph and looking psychotic from Char’s point of view.
Anyway, Char believes that Ella tried to kill him and Edgar “arrests” her.
Slannen and the giants organize a protest, there’s a battle, Char finds out about Edgar and Edgar accidentally poisons himself.
Again, because Shrek was a big thing at the time, we get a big cast dance party at Char and Ella’s wedding to “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.”
Ella Enchanted is a charming fairy tale.
