I liked the Lizzie McGuire TV show when I was a kid and I also liked The Lizzie McGuire Movie; but, does it hold up?
Let’s find out:
The film is about the TV character Lizzie McGuire (Hilary Duff). Lizzie and her friend/love interest David “Gordo” Gordon (Adam Lamberg) go to Rome and she is mistaken for pop star Isabella (also Duff). Isabella has gone off the grid and she lip syncs; so, her former singing partner, Paolo (Yani Gellman), asks Lizzie to pose as Isabella so that he and Isabella will not have to pay a cancelation fee for canceling a performance, and…
Plenty of people from Roger Ebert to various YouTube horror re-cut trailers have pointed out the creepiness of the Lizzie-Paolo relationship, and…
It is creepy. A grown man and a teenager? Nothing creepy about that.
Anyway, we then see Lizzie try on some of Lady Gaga’s outfits.
We also get some character development for Kate (Ashlie Brillault), the teen bully from the TV show, and teen movie bullies rarely get character development.
Anyway, Isabella arrives and we find out that Paolo is the one who lip syncs. Isabella stops Paolo from humiliating Lizzie, Isabella and Lizzie sing a duet together and Lizzie and Gordo get together.
While the acting will not be as good as you remember, The Lizzie McGuire Movie is still a nostalgic ride for me.
